Have you ever just packed up and moved to a completely new country? Well, neither have we – because if you grow up in Tirol, you usually don’t want to leave. But that’s exactly why we asked our beloved newcomers what brought them here – and how they managed to turn a foreign place into a real home.

Leon von Pigage, electrician

Leon is originally from Bremervörde and is a passionate paraglider. It was his love of the mountains and dislike of the 1000-kilometre drive to get to them that convinced him to move to Lienz, where he discovered a whole new hobby.

Melanie Hirzinger, qualified health care nurse

Melanie Hirzinger settled in Tirol thanks to a spontaneous idea whilst on holiday here. The qualified nurse has now been living in the region for twelve years and has also been able to gain further professional qualifications with the support of her employer.

Roberto Tricarico, quantum physicist

From Naples to the Tyrolean Alps! After spending time in Italy and Spain, Roberto Tricarico moved to Innsbruck in 2025, where he conducts research at the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI) operated by the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
