ELIZA KACENA,

HOSPITALITY WORKER

Elīza has been working in the hospitality industry for 22 years. An avid snowboarder, she originally came to Innsbruck for just one year but ended up staying permanently.

"I like the work because I enjoy working with people"

When I was 16, I often worked at the bar of a snow park in Latvia on weekends to earn a little money. That was 22 years ago, and I still work in the hospitality industry. I like the work because I enjoy working with people and because there is so much variety. You never know how the day will go – there are surprises every day. But you can also work anywhere if you come from the hospitality industry. The work is always the same. And you can choose which job you want to do. You can work in a bar or in a café. There are many options to choose from. And you will always have a job in the hospitality industry.

“The mountains are simply my happy place”

Before I came to Innsbruck, I lived in Ireland and worked at the Hard Rock Café there. Then in 2017, I saw that they were opening a Hard Rock Café in Innsbruck, so I came to Tirol before it opened. I always went skiing on my holidays and thought that maybe I could work somewhere here in the winter. At first, I only wanted to come for a year and then go back to Latvia, but after a month I returned to Innsbruck. The mountains are simply my happy place. I can do something here every day, whether it’s winter or summer. I used to wait all year to go skiing for a week, and in the first few years I went five or six times a week. Nowadays, I often go splitboarding, and in summer I like to go via ferrata climbing.

"You get 14 monthly salaries here"

When I first came to Tirol, I couldn't speak any German. If you're only coming for a few weeks or months, you don't need to, because many people here speak English. But it's better if you speak the language a little, especially if you're staying longer. You need it every day, in shops, at the doctor's, at the bank. It's incredible that I can go to the doctor here and don't have to pay. People in Austria may think that's normal, but it's not. I used to fly home from Ireland whenever I needed to see a doctor because it was really expensive there. But now I have everything I need here. I was also quite surprised that you get 14 monthly salaries here, i.e. two salaries twice a year. That's something special. And then there's the Klimaticket. It is a ticket you can use to travel wherever you want on any public transport all year round. I think that if you work, you can do so much here in your free time. Tirol is a dream destination for anyone who loves the mountains.

"You will always get a job in the hospitality industry."
