Proficiency in German at level B1 (nursing assistant professions) or level B2 (registered nurses) is a legal requirement for nostrification in the nursing profession in Tirol. This is not only due to formal requirements, but above all to the practical reality of everyday working life.
There are numerous regional dialects in Tirol – from Oberland to Unterland – which must be quickly understood in everyday life. Nursing staff are confronted with different linguistic nuances on a daily basis, which require a high degree of linguistic flexibility and understanding.
At the same time, German is the central language of communication in the nursing profession, as it is the language of the patients. Unlike in other industries, where it is possible to switch to other languages, this is not practical in the nursing context. Clear, confident and empathetic communication in German is essential for the quality of care, patient safety and interprofessional collaboration.
The good news is that anyone who lives in Tirol and regularly comes into contact with the German language in everyday life – whether while shopping, among colleagues or in contact with patients – has the best conditions for successfully learning and improving their language skills. Daily use promotes understanding and confidence in expression, so that language barriers can be overcome with commitment and practice. Our healthcare and nursing facilities employ highly qualified people from a wide variety of nations and cultures – what they all have in common is communication in German.
1. Education in the EU, EEA or Switzerland
If you obtained your degree in a member state of the European Union, the European Economic Area or Switzerland, you benefit from a simplified recognition procedure.
For certain professions – for example, certified health care and nursing – there is a one-stop procedure. Recognition is usually granted by the Federal Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection in Vienna.
If your training meets the European minimum standards, it will usually be recognised without additional examinations. If there are differences, compensatory measures may be required, such as an aptitude test or an adaptation course.
2. Training in a third country (outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland)
If you completed your training in a country outside the EU, EEA or Switzerland, a process known as nostrification is necessary. The Department of Health Law and Hospitals of the Tyrolean Provincial Government will check whether your training corresponds to Austrian training in terms of content and scope.
The procedure includes:
Submission of an application with all necessary documents (diplomas, training plans, proof of professional experience, certified translations).
Technical review by experts.
Decision: Recognition in case of equivalence; in case of differences, supplementary measures (e.g., courses, exams, internships) are determined.
3. Transitional solutions
If your qualifications are largely, but not completely, equivalent, in certain cases you may be permitted to work on a temporary basis under supervision as part of further training. This requires special approval from the state authority.

Why is registration necessary?
Only those who are registered in the GBR have official professional authorisation. This means without registration, the respective health profession may not be practiced in Austria. Registration serves the purposes of quality assurance, transparency and patient safety.

In Tirol, salaries in the nursing sector are regulated by law. Both nursing facilities and hospitals are subject to a similar salary system, which is adjusted annually.
A key feature of this system is the payment of a 13th and 14th month’s salary – specifically, this refers to vacation and Christmas bonuses, which all employees are entitled to. Additional payments (night shifts, Sunday and public holiday shifts, etc.) are firmly anchored in the salary system and are considered standard in public and non-profit health and care facilities.
Private providers, on the other hand, are not obliged to follow this scheme and can apply their own salary models.
Working hours in nursing care in Tirol are generally based on a 40-hour week for full-time employees. However, the specific regulations vary considerably depending on the institution. Many organisations offer flexible working time models, part-time options and different shift systems to meet the individual needs of employees and operational requirements.
Shift lengths can vary greatly, from shorter shifts to shifts of up to 12 hours. Some institutions use so-called pool systems, which allow employees to organise their own work schedules, giving them a high degree of autonomy and flexibility.
In nursing, it is common to work according to a duty roster. This is usually drawn up by the responsible manager and published in a month in advance so that employees have planning security at an early stage and can better coordinate their private and professional commitments.
